How to Write SEO Meta Descriptions That Get Clicks (With Examples)

๐Ÿ“… June 2026 ยท ๐Ÿ“– 8 min read ยท โœ๏ธ TextToolKit Team

Your meta description is the short text that appears under your page title in Google search results. It's your one chance to convince searchers to click your link instead of the 9 other results on the page.

A well-written meta description can increase your click-through rate (CTR) by 5-10%. A bad one โ€” or worse, a missing one โ€” leaves it to Google to pull whatever text it finds, which is often not the best first impression.

What Makes a Great Meta Description?

ElementWhat WorksWhat Doesn't
Length150-160 charactersUnder 120 (wasted space) or over 160 (truncated)
Keyword placementPrimary keyword near the beginningKeyword stuffing 3+ times
Call to action"Learn how", "Get started", "Find out why"No action, just a summary
Value propWhat the reader will learn or getJust describing what the page is about

Example: Before and After

Before (bad): "This article discusses keyword research and how to do it for your website. We cover various tools and techniques."

โ†’ 150 characters, but no hook, no action, no value. Boring.

After (good): "Master keyword research in 10 minutes. Free tools, step-by-step guide, and expert tips to find high-traffic keywords for your niche."

โ†’ 153 characters. Tells you what you'll learn, includes a time commitment, and promises value.

Common Meta Description Mistakes

  1. Duplicate descriptions across pages โ€” Google may penalize or ignore pages with identical descriptions
  2. No description at all โ€” Google will auto-generate one, but it might pick irrelevant text
  3. Keyword stuffing โ€” "Keyword research, keyword tools, best keyword research, keyword research guide" โ€” this reads like spam
  4. False promises โ€” Don't write "Free guide" if the page requires signup. Users will bounce, hurting your SEO
  5. Too short or too long โ€” Under 120 characters wastes valuable real estate; over 160 gets cut off mid-sentence
